Entrevista a Joe Dolman / Interview to Joe Dolman

A principios de año sacó su primer EP, Learning to fly, pero antes de eso ya consiguió tocar en el Introducing stage de BBC Radio 2 en Hyde Park. Ahora va camino de su segundo EP, una gira y este mes toca en París, os presento a Joe Dolman.

1-¿Qué pensabas cuando empezaste tu canal de YouTube? ¿Siempre habías pensado en ser cantante?

Publiqué mi primer vídeo de YouTube después de que al cantar en un homenaje a un amigo, algunos me pidieran que lo subiera para así poder enseñárselo a amigos y familiares que no pudieron asistir. Desde entonces tenía varias personas que me decían que debía publicar más vídeos. Y así lo hice por algo de diversión, aceptaba propuestas de versiones de la gente a la vez que escribía mis propias canciones. Nunca pensé que sería cantante, toco varios instrumentos, en varios estilos, pero nunca se me había cruzado por la cabeza cantar, ¡Pasó de forma natural!

2- ¿Piensas que hubieras sacado un EP y todo lo demás si las redes sociales no existieran?

Las redes sociales son una herramienta usada por mí y otros muchos artistas para lanzar su música, supongo que no sentiría que tengo una audiencia con quien compartir mi música si no fuera por las redes sociales. Diciendo esto, aun así habría sacado música ya que vendo copias físicas de mi EP en CDs en conciertos y cuando toco en la calle, pero me han ayudado mucho con mi confianza.

3-¿Cómo te sientes sobre los comentarios que te llegan y el apoyo fan?

Estoy muy abierto a críticas tanto positivas como constructivas. Siempre quiero mejorar como músico, intérprete y escritor pero me alaga mucho todo el apoyo que recibo y ¡no podría estar donde estoy sin él!

4-Hablemos un poco sobre cómo escribes canciones. Primero, ¿Cuándo comenzaste a escribir letras? Y, ¿De dónde te llega la inspiración?

Mis primeros intentos de canciones los hice en mi último año de instituto. No lo tomé demasiado en serio hasta que llegué al college donde estudié dos años música. La inspiración me llega de todo, mi familia, mis amigos, extraños, ¡Incluso de los programas de televisión! Siempre intento identificarlos con mi propia vida y las situaciones que he vivido dado que me ayuda a conectar más con mis canciones.

5- ¿Cuál es tu canción favorita de Learning to fly o de la que te sientes más orgulloso?

¡No estoy seguro sobre la favorita! De las que estoy más orgulloso son Learning to fly y Circles, sin embargo, Lost es una de las primeras canciones en condiciones que hice.

6- ¿Hay alguien con quien te gustaría escribir una canción? ¿Y un cantante con quien te gustaría cantar?

¡No puedo elegir tan sólo uno por pregunta!

7- En agosto vas a realizar un concierto en París, ¿Cómo te sientes?¿Esperabas poder salir de RU para tocar este año?

Estoy muy emocionado, no puedo creer el apoyo que estoy recibiendo por el concierto y no puedo esperar a llegar. Siempre he querido pero nunca pensé que podría hacerlo ¡este año! Tengo mucha suerte.

8-¿Habrá más conciertos en el extranjero pronto? ¿A qué países te gustaría ir?

Desafortunadamente no puedo decir si habrá o no, me encantaría decir que sí, que voy a hacer un World tour, pero aún no soy lo suficientemente conocido como para poder viajar tanto. Me encantaría viajar por todo el mundo y tocar ¡para cualquier persona que quiera escuchar!

9- En noviembre vas a realizar tu mayor gira hasta la fecha, ¿Va a ser diferente de otro de tus conciertos dado que tocas con una banda?

Será muy nuevo para mí estar al frente de una banda tocando mis propias canciones pero imagino que el ambiente será muy similar ¡con algo más de energía!

10- Tu nuevo EP está en camino, ¿Qué nos puedes contar?

Estoy muy emocionado por sacar estas nuevas canciones al mundo, ¡No puedo esperar saber qué opináis!

Earlier this year his first EP, Learning to fly, was released, but before that he had the chance to play at the BBC Radio2 Introducing stage in Hyde Park. Now he is on the way of releasing a new EP, playing a Headline show and playing a gig in Paris this month, let me introduce you to Joe Dolman.

1-What were you thinking when you first started your YouTube channel? Had you always thought about being a singer?

I posted my first youtube video as I had sang a requested song at a friends memorial, and some friends had asked me to post it up so they could share it with friends/family who couldn't attend the service. From then on I had a few people saying I should post more videos. So I just did for a bit of fun, taking requests of covers whilst having a go at writing my own songs. I never thought I would be a singer, I play a handful of different instruments in different styles but singing wasn't anything that ever seriously crossed my mind, it just happened very naturally!

2-Do you think you would have released an EP and everything else if social media didn't exist?

Social media is a massive tool used by me and a lot of artists to get their music out there, I guess I wouldn't feel like I had as much of an audience to share my music with if it wasn't for social media. Saying that, I would have still been releasing music as I sell physical copies of my EP on a CD at gigs and busking, but social media has definitely helped with my confidence.

3-How do you feel about the feedback you get and the fan support?

I'm very open to feedback both positive and constructive criticism. I'm always looking to improve myself as a musician, performer and writer but I am very flattered by the support I receive, and really wouldn't be where I am without it!

4- Let's talk a bit about how you write songs. Firstly, when did you start writing songs? And, where do you get you inspiration from?

I started attempting to write songs when I was in my last year of high school. I didn't really take it seriously till I moved to college where I studied music for 2 years. I take inspiration from everything, my family, my friends, strangers, even TV programmes I've watched! I always try and relate them to my own personal life and situations I've been in as it helps me to connect with my lyrics more.

5- What is your favourite song from the 'Learning to fly' or the one you are the most proud of?

I'm not really sure on a favourite! I'm most proud of Learning to Fly and Circles, however Lost was one of the first proper songs I ever wrote!

6- Is there someone you would like to write a song with? And what about a singer you would love to sing with?

I couldn't choose just one for each of those!

7- In August you are playing a gig in Paris, how do you feel? Were you expecting to go out of the UK this year to play?

I'm very excited, I can't believe the support I'm getting for the show and can't wait to travel over. I've wanted to but never thought I would be able to this year! i'm very lucky.

8- Are there going to be more concerts overseas soon? What countries would you like to go to?

Unfortunately I couldn't say if there will or won't be, I'd love to say yes I'm doing a world tour but I'm not quite well known enough to warrant travelling so much yet! I'd love to travel all over the world and play, to anyone who wants to listen!

9- In November you are doing your biggest headline show to date, is it going to be different from your other gigs since you are playing with a band?

It will be very new to me fronting a band playing my own songs but I imagine the atmosphere to be very similar with a touch more energy!

10- Your new EP is on its way, can you tell us something about it?

I'm really excited to release these new songs in to the world, can't wait to hear what you think!
